Unless mistaken, I believe that Lovie Smith was and still is the head coach of the Chicago Bears.
Therefore, the ultimate responsibility of the Hester Wide Receiver Failed Experiment for the past 3 seasons falls upon the head coach and not the scapegoated recently deposed offensive coordinator.
True, but it was Turner who pushed for it. I would say that, after the first season, they should have pulled the plug. But who knows what went on in Halas Hall?
Funny I looked at Hester wanting to go back to returning kicks as him seeing the writing on the wall with Martz..Kind of “Oh shit Martz isn’t going to use me at WR much so I better try to keep my job by volunteering to go back to special teams”.
Either way, the Hester experiment appears to be over....Thank God..
A more experienced wide receiver perhaps familiar with Martz’s expanded playbook would help.
Although the above mention have better odds at understanding the route patterns rather then Mr. Hester, it is a little much to ask from a sophomore and a guy just off the practice squad.
The head coach has the final say on which players take to the field and how they line up in position.
Ron Turner was never provided a legitimate go to wide receiver.
Returning Devin Hester to special teams is easy enough but the Bears still have no answer at wide receiver.
I think maybe they might have some potential at WR with Aromashadu & Knox though. Time will tell.
Michael Irvin has it right:
Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin says the Bears need to stop fooling themselves into thinking Hester can do it all offensively.
“You wanna play him at receiver, find out only the special things he does and burden him with those,” said Irvin. “Stop asking him to be the total package at receiver when you have a receiver full-time that’s not the total package.
If we’re mostly interested in assigning blame, it is ultimately the head coach’s responsibility. If we’re interested in what’s going to happen next, it never would have happened if Turner hadn’t pushed for it, and now that Martz appears to want Hester in a reduced role on offense, the Bears appear poised to correct a mistake.
Although I think calling Hester a #1 WR ranks among the stupidest things the Bears have done under Lovie (and that’s saying something), I think it would be a mistake not to use him in the offense, especially now that he’s become an effective receiver. I always thought Hester would thrive in the slot, as have other great return men like Az Hakim and Reggie Sanders. It appears that’s what Martz is thinking, too. In the slot, Hester could use his open field running skills and not have to worry about blocking (which he’s terrible at).
So let him be full-time returner and part-time offense, not full-time offense and part-time returner.

If Martz is smart, he’d convince Lovie of just that. Having Hester back on full-time return duties also benefits the offense (field position, etc.). Short fields can help open the run and vertical passing game, and keep full time receivers, like Knox, from getting hurt on returns. My guess is that this will happen. Pull out all stops to prevent what appears to be the inevitable of firing the head coach.
I would also add that getting a veteran WR isn’t a bad idea. You have DA, Knox, and Earl Bennett. Greg Olsen, and pick up another WR. Use Devin in specialty packages, and get him back into the special teams unit full time.
