Hector Santiago throws a screwball.

Adding the rarely seen screwball to his pitching repertoire has changed the career path of Hector Santiago for the better.

That pitch also has produced quite a few surprised reactions from hitters who have been consistently fooled by the offering.

“I’ve talked to a bunch of guys just in between pitches, and they were like, ‘Whoa, what was that thing?’” said White Sox catcher Josh Phegley, who worked with Santiago at Double-A Birmingham in 2011. “It surprised them every time.

On a more serious note, that screwball is why Santiago wasn’t sent down yesterday and has a shot of making the team.

I sign every autograph I can for kids because I remember myself at that age. I think it’s ridiculous that some guys won’t sign for a kid.

He will probably be one or two pitchers to make the team then since they are down to 13 pitchers.

If you need pitchers, call Theo.

Travis Wood is all yours.

KW is probably on the phone begging the Cubs to trade Travis Wood and Carlos Marmol for Hector Santiago.
