“I had a few options to choose from and I definitely wasn’t going to wear No. 88, that’s for sure,” Sharp said with a laugh from Helsinki. “I thought 81 was symbolic for my birth year — being the oldest guy on the team — and of course for the ‘Hossman’ as well.”

The 88 comment, of course, was Sharp’s jab at Hawks teammate Patrick Kane, who along with Jonathan Toews, is sitting out the tournament to recover from injuries and rest up for the 2012-13 NHL season.

All the great players in every sport kept their heads down, their noses clean, their collars starched. They showed respect, played the game the right way, and behaved well away from their sport.

Every player who has ever gone drinking in the offseason, had run-ins with the law or streaks of selfishness has always hurt his team, even if you couldn’t tell he was hurting it. He was.
