Youkilis is 2-2 tonight but Dunn, Konerko and Rios are a combined 0-6 behind him. Axelrod is pitching well, allowing one run in 4 innings, with 6 strikeouts and no walks.

Nobody can blame Youkilis or Axelrod for that loss. Youkilis had 3 of the 5 Sox hits, with A.J. having the other two. When the No.2 and No.6 hitters are the only ones with hits, there is not much chance of winning the game. Konerko was the only Sox to walk and Youkilis was only one to strike out. Axelrod left the game with two outs in the 7th inning, while striking out 8 and lowered his ERA from 6.16 to 5.30. Leyson Septimo saw his ERA rise from 1.93 to 7.20 after giving up the 3 run homer to Adrian Gonzalez. Axelrod has pitched in 3 of the last 5 Sox games, having pitched in last game before the break, first game after the break, then got the start last night.
Phillip Humber starts his first game since June 16 today. He has given up 14 runs in his last 15 innings, over his last three starts. He is 3-4 with a 6.01 ERA. Jon Lester 5-6, 4.49 ERA gets the start for Boston.
Worst of all Cleveland and Detroit gained a game on the Sox with wins yesterday.

The bullpen and the lack of offense blew that game last night.
I agree...It is almost impossible to win a game, when 7 of the hitters go hitless and the bullpen gives up 4 runs in 1 1/3 innings, after Axelrod gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings.

While the team batting average, on base .pct and slugging pct. isn’t that much better than last year, the Sox are on a pace to hit way more homers and score way more runs than last year. Not to mention Rios and Dunn didn’t prosper much under Walker. Both have have improved big time this year under Jeff Manto.
