Sun Times Op Ed piece wants the Olympics in Chicago. Why? Because it’s pretty.

Tourists stayed away in droves during the Olympics, not just around London, but the United Kingdom as a whole, apparently fearing the prices would be high, the crowds heavy.

Those who did visit for the Olympics spent less at restaurants and stores than typical tourists, London business owners groused.

Meanwhile, in Chicago, sighs of relief could already be heard around town about our city and its failed Olympic dream.

The first sigh went something like this:

Thank God, Chicago lost its bid for the summer Olympics for 2016.

Quickly followed by another:

Chicago should not even think about trying for the games again.

We’re wondering if those observers saw the same Olympics we did.

Did they see the manic, ecstatic crowds?

If I want to hear people squeal I’ll just show up naked in a girl’s locker-room. It’ll save me money, even after I make bail.

The Sun-Times is a haven for liberal hacks with hope and change aspirations not conducive in the real brick and mortar world wisely operated by folks that know better.

The Op Ed seemingly does not credit an author for this left wing bullshit. However the single sentence paragraph structure reeks of Rick Telander.

Chicago is a first class fuck up red tape bureaucracy mobbed up by a long running criminal local town flavored Democrat machine.

And this machine will run Chicago down to the depths of being Detroit-West as it stands unchallenged in the voting booths.

The Olympics is the pinnacle for swindling hucksters from the old boys’ club. One final hurrah of corruption. One final pinch of the taxpayers pockets. And one final swap of bullshit shovel ready construction projects to shady contractors in exchange for suitcases of cash.

Again, it is bullshit. Everything about the Olympics is bullshit. And everything about Chicago politics is bullshit.

I so enjoy blanked statements that have nothing to support them or define what they mean.

All reasonable points, but they all miss the point.

What exactly is the point?

If it turns out that the post-Olympic hangover isn’t just a mild headache but a bone-shaking crippler for London for years to come, then it would give Chicago much pause and much to reconsider.

What exactly is there for Chicago to reconsider?  The city leaders tried for the Olympic Games, they even enlisted the President of the United States to try to obtain them.  This whole missive seems to have been spawned from someone thinking out loud, “That would have been fun to cover, if only it were in our back yard.”

I certainly hope someone does some real reporting on these games to learn what the City of London, the Country of England and all of Great Britain spent on these games and a realistic determination of the actual money spent on the games by visitors in comparison of what is usually spent by tourists during this same two week period.

I remember an article from Indianapolis shortly after the Super Bowl that business directly adjacent to Lucas Oil Stadium did ok, but those a few blocks away had their business drop off due to patrons thinking they would not be able to get around downtown Indy and the visitors not going more than four blocks from their hotels.

Fuck Telander, I like this lady’s style.

(Ms. Neleen) Strauss took the bill, for £90 000, to Johnson on Thursday, claiming that her turnover has been down 80 percent after the mayor’s “scaremongering” tactics ahead of the Games.

“I’m not someone who is usually given to fits of pique. Nor will this period break me,” wrote Strauss in City AM, a London business daily on Friday. “I’m South African and I deal with problems head on, normally after a look at the cricket score while turning over a chop on the braai. But no braai will fill the substantial void in my company accounts.

“I squarely blame Johnson for my lack of customers because, time and again, he warned Londoners to leave room for the millions of visitors he said would come to the capital. This inspired city bosses to suggest that their employees either take their holidays during the Olympics, or work from home.

“The head of a large City accountancy firm told me that the number of employees actually working in his office had dropped to 15 percent. There is no-one here. And the heralded influx of tourists didn’t land in the city. They travelled east, where the action is.”

The only Olympics that actually made money was LA in ‘84, only because they voted against using zero public funds for the games.

How many Olympic venues, say, in the last 30 years, are used a year after their events? I’m thinking 10% optimistically.
Ask Vancouver who is living in their Olympic Village now?
Why did it take 3 decades for Montreal to pay off the Olympics?

Anyone with a lick of common sense doesn’t want the Olympics in their fair city. Of course, this is Chicago, where we can’t elect a person with common sense.
