I believe the Sun-Times and its sports columnist Mr. Jay Mariotti equally owe an apology to University of Illinois Men’s Basketball Head Coach Bruce Weber for the following insensitive comment published Saturday, March 10 2007:
Stop telling us, in a tortured voice that more than ever smacks of a cross between AC/DC’s singer and Edith Bunker, that Illinois has an RPI in the 30s, a schedule rating in the 30s, no bad losses and ‘’more man games missed than any team in the country,’’ if that indeed is true.
Mr. Weber is a gentleman of integrity and has overcome this physical condition with tremendous bravery and courage. His conviction to provide an excellent men’s basketball program while maintaining a priority towards academic achievement is impressive. And his graciousness towards the ever demanding media, despite a vocal impairment that has inflicted him since a childhood surgery, is beyond reproach.
As an avid reader and follower of the Chicago Sun-Times, I am quite shocked and dismayed that a prominent columnist and important television personality such as Mr. Mariotti would elect to ridicule a man of Mr. Weber’s stature simply for his vocal impairment. I would suggest that this was rather childish and immature. Perhaps Mr. Mariotti would benefit from correspondence of The Voice Foundation (http://www.voicefoundation.org/) to heighten his sensitivity in the future towards Mr. Weber and others inflicted with vocal impairment conditions.
Thank you for your time and consideration to this shameful matter. On behalf of all Chicagoan sports fans, I wish to extend my apologies to Mr. Weber for being subject to this ugly attack during Mr. Weber’s most stressful stage of a basketball season. Certainly Mr. Mariotti does not speak for all us Chicagoans. I sincerely hope that Mr. Weber understands how much we appreciate his hard work and dedication.
Good luck to the rest of this season Coach. And shame to the Sun-Times Sports Department for permitting this type of trash from Mr. Mariotti to be published.
