Recent Interview on Chicagoist.  Not sure if anyone saw it, but we get a brief mention.  What do you guys think is behind his softened stance on Jay?

Seems possible that he may have had a mandate from above not to bash Jay publicly ... I don’t know ... he seemed hesitant to discuss specifics. But who knows.

Jay Mariotti Calls for Suspension of Billy Packer

Posted Apr 4th 2007 5:51PM by Michael David Smith
Filed under: NCAA Basketball Gossip, NCAA Basketball Media Watch, Chicago, Featured Stories

At the conclusion of ESPN’s Around the Horn today, panelist Jay Mariotti said he thought CBS should come down hard on basketball analyst Billy Packer for telling Charlie Rose, “you always fag out” during an appearance on Rose’s show.

“CBS would make a good stand here by suspending Packer,” Mariotti said.

Mariotti, of course is the Chicago Sun-Times columnist who was called a “fag” by White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. Mariotti at the time called for Guillen to be suspended, so perhaps he’s just trying to be consistent now with his call for Packer to be suspended.

I sense that this story isn’t going to go away as quickly as CBS would like. However, given that Packer’s job is to talk about college basketball and CBS won’t broadcast another college basketball game for seven or eight months, I think the story will be forgotten, for the most part, before we see Packer on TV again.

It seems to me like the Packer story is pretty much dead or on life support. From the context it was pretty clear he was using “fag” in a very antiquated, old-timey way from before it became a slur.

As I’ve said before, that’s why they should fire Packer.  He’s a crotchety old fart.

Tinky never looked up the word in the dictionary. Again, must have just took the quote out of context while trolling the repository.

The thing that gets me is the way he phrased things. It was like he was trying not to upset the Mob or something. Very odd.

The last time you were on the Steve Dahl show in September, you really broke bad on Jay Mariotti. How did that play out in the newsroom the next day?

NS: Well ... Mariotti wasn’t happy. You know what — I’ve gotten to know Mariotti better since then. I don’t think people understand the true Jay Mariotti. And as much as they dislike him, I don’t think they really grasp his depth. Nor understand what kind of person he is.

Let’s put it this way — after I talked to Steve [about Jay] I became familiar with the quality of person that he is. And it inspired me to not want to … make him unhappy. [laughs] I know that’s oblique.

C: So based on all that, I don’t suppose you take any credit for the Jay the Joke website, which coincidentally enough is run by one of Dahl’s kids?

NS: No, I think that was an accident — I had nothing to do with it. But it seems to be very well done. But as I said, I was very, very sorry to inject myself into Jay’s world about that.

People not “grasping Jay’s depth” is like people not understanding the depth of my BEER THREAD!!!  dbanana

There is a lot of depth to your beer thread, Jamel.  I mean $6 beer = no Pam.  What is deeper then that?

This was the Steinberg interview about F***tard on the Dahl Radio Show.

Go ahead and email Neil. He is pretty cool about answering correspondence and doesn’t mince words. I’m pretty sure you will get a very candid response. The address is:

Read between the lines on all of this and do your own work. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Fire the F***tard.

Thanks Ed… I know that YOU SEE and YOU UNDERSTAND but there are millions of people out there who honestly don’t understand my thread (just like F***tard’s column), it’s just too deep for people to fully grasp.

Like $6 beers-- the world will slowly be destroyed if beers stay at $6 or more.... it’s a chain reaction
Like F***tard’s column--- the word “fag” will slowly destroy us all!!!!
