The Kansas City Star is reporting that this is is one possible trade for the Cubs. There are also rumors about Pie getting dumped. Make of it what you will, but I think the Fontenot deal would be incredibly stupid. He is a great player, likes the post season and he isn’t arbitration eligible until 2010. But, what do I know? I’m just a blogger.
Mike Fontenot has a .290 lifetime batting average and hit .333 in the NLDS in 2008. I don’t see why the Cubs are so enthused with Mark Teahen. He batted .255 in 2008 with 15 homers but only 59 RBI’s. He struck out 131 times. If they want someone to strikeout a lot just keep Fukudome who struck out just 104 times. In the last three seasons Teahen’s batting average has dropped from .290 to .285 to .255. His RBI’s have dropped from 69 to 60 to 59. His on base percentage has dropped from .357 to .353 to .313. His slugging percentage has dropped from .517 to .410 to .402. In 2007 he led the AL in grounding into double plays with 23. Why the Cubs are after Teahen is beyond me.
I don’t like this deal. The only thing Teahen has going for him is that he plays RF. Fontenot, despite his size, even has better power numbers (9 HR 243 AB vs. 15 HR 527 AB).
Living in Omaha—I am forced to watch a lot of Royals games ... Teahan typically only hits wells against the White Sox. The guy, overall, really isn’t that good. He doesn’t hit for much power (against teams but the White Sox)… he is versatile, however, he can play OF, 3B and 1B, though.
According to MLB.com Teahan for Fontenot is the deal du jour. Because getting a guy who hit .255 on a last place team for a guy who hit .305 on a first place team and has had success in the post season is just such a good idea.
