The one blog I regularly follow isn’t really a blog. It’s on AOL.com, and it features a perpetual roundup of news and commentary. In particular, Michael David Smith provides a solid, credible foundation—ACCURACY!!! PROFESSIONALISM!!!—that some of the Revenge of the Nerds sites have lacked. - Jay Mariotti
Jay Mariotti hates Chicago. No big secret there, one supposes. And quite mutually, the City of Broad Shoulders has rightfully despised the alleged columnist’s habitual attacks against its sports scenes and citizens over the past 15 years.
Who hates who more?
No real definitive answer there. Consider it a “chicken or egg first” unanswerable riddle.
Not too long ago, Jay lectured to college students (poor souls) on the rather ironical topic of ethics in journalism. In typical back page pundit self-righteous mode, Mariotti’s bravado on the subject included a steadfast assertion that he didn’t have the time to criticize the work of his colleagues.
Oh really?
Ever since the creation of his monstrous ”Mariotti 24/7” incessant ramblings, Jay has launched verbal grenades towards several local scene journalists, radio broadcasters and rival newspapers.
Apparently Jay has completely given up his imposter act of being a credible sports columnist, let alone as a journalist. It seems the allure of mugging for the camera as ESPN’s official buffoon is far too enchanting. Or perhaps its just a convenient way out from having to commit to legitimate work.
Whatever the reason, the back page of the Sun-Times continues to be molested by Mariotti’s revenge seeking tirades (see today’s drivel regarding Bob Knight’s resignation) and its website’s bandwidth wasted on spewing hatred over every Chicagoan.
Mariotti really hates blogs but not for the reasons feebly indicated. During those rather innocent pre-Internet days, lazy hacks such as Jay could easily slide by incorrect date lines, factual incorrect assertions, lazy reporting and suggestively “borrowing” the work of others.
But not anymore thanks to watchdog bloggers disgusted by these antics. And despite urban legend, this particular blog was not the first to call out Jay over inaccuracies and just plain idiotic exploitive commentary. In particular, Deadspin, has been on “The Mariotti Trail” for quite sometime.
Today, Jay goes tremendous lengths to rip Bob Knight. Apparently over 40 years and 900 wins in college basketball warrants the label of “quitter” despite any attempt whatsoever by Mariotti to duh.... investigate the facts of the story. But why bother, after all that is the work of lowly “house reporters”, right Jay?
Bob Knight may invoke a variety of opinions but the man’s longevity and dedication to his career (along with an impeccable graduation rate among his student-athletes) should not be thrown so carelessly on top of the urinal cake for Jay to squat over when relieving himself. And how ironic of Mariotti to accuse anyone of being a “quitter” after his own little “strike” during his contract extension negotiation in the aftermath of Fag Gate.
In time, Jay will learn the universal truth of life that what goes around, inevitably comes around. Ultimately, the shroud of ignorance hovering over the Sun-Times will be lifted as Chicago’s true “assclown-for-life” will be permanently exiled.
