Web Smith: We’re the good guys. Why are we running?
Capt. John Connor: We’re not running. We’re eluding.
One can only ponder which newspaper Larry Probst enjoys reading during his morning breakfast.
Undoubtedly, the organizers of the Chicago 2016 Olympics bid provide Mr. Probst a complimentary paper. After all, Patrick Sandusky would hate to keep the new USOC Head out of the loop on the daily trials and tribulations of our fair city.
So if Probst were to enjoy this morning edition of the Chicago Sun-Times, he would be enlightened on the federal investigation of the five construction companies employed by Mayor Richard Daley for the O’Hare expansion:
Federal authorities are investigating five construction companies that collectively have gotten hundreds of millions of dollars in construction work at O’Hare Airport under Mayor Daley, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.
Guess some truth might actually exist amongst the daily rants of recently deposed and soon to be federally tried ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich.
Or perhaps, Probst is reading the Chicago Tribune instead. And on the front page of this morning’s edition, a headline screams about Monroe Harbor boaters being strong armed by City Hall over Olympics preparation. Specifically, for the almighty sport of rowing.
Here is a little taste of Daley’s latest power play tactic:
The Chicago Yachting Association, an umbrella group for 15 yacht clubs in the Chicago area, has asked members to keep a lid on it, noting in a memo obtained by the Tribune that yacht clubs “are vulnerable to retribution.”
Mayor Richard Daley’s office and the Chicago Park District have made it clear “that they do not wish to talk about issues that may be confrontational until after October 2009,” according to the memo by an association committee charged with formulating an approach to the city’s Olympic plans.
Now Larry Probst might just be a little disturbed by this allegation. After all, he might not be as tuned into Chicago political theology as his predecessor Peter Ueberroth.
Furthermore, it is most apparent that Daley intends to conduct business for the Olympics as he did with O’Hare. And that being in complete secrecy with no regard for full public disclosure. After all, Chicago tax payers are potentially on the hook for $500 million for this white elephant project (should private financing renege on its commitment). Why the hell should Daley’s constituents be informed of any decision process making?
The alibis and excuses are priceless. And also unforgivable:
Chicago 2016 officials have said they would not release a complete list of donors out of respect for the privacy of those giving. That keeps the public from knowing about companies and individuals who may be donating money and seeking city or Olympic contracts. Donors to the Olympic bid aren’t covered by a mayoral order banning city contractors from giving to Daley’s campaign fund.
Attention big time contracting wonks! The deadline for your “campaign contribution” is rapidly nearing! Pay your homage to King Richard now! Be kind to your King and kindness will be returned in good favor! Long live the King!
Sheesh.
Are you really still going to back this Chicago Olympics 2016 bid, President Obama?
And sorry Larry for ruining your breakfast. If you have not already done so, check out the Sun-Times. It is finally Jay Mariotti free.
