Jay wastes all three of his* remaining brain cells to call, WNBA star, Rebecca Lynn Hammon a traitor. Since that is an actual legal term and it could lead to the death penalty, I was a little concerned. However, Ms. Hammon has nothing to fear since Jay, as usual, got everything wrong.
Here are the facts; Ms. Hammon did not make the US Olympic squad. Since she has Russian ancestors, plays on a Russian team in the off season and became a Russian citizen this year, they offered her a chance to fulfill her dream and compete in the Olympics. That’s all there is. She couldn’t betray a team she was not on.
Jay’s hyperbolic, nationalistic, fervor harkens back to those old film reels where lots of people wore brown shirts and mindlessly hefted their stiff right arms into the night sky. But, before anyone can damn Ms. Hammon for her choice, we need to take a look at the “national purity” of the US team.
Russian born gymnast, Nastia Liukin, came to the US at the age of 2 1/2 when her parents (both world class gymnasts) decided to pursue better opportunites. She wanted to compete in the Olympics. She did and now she has won gold. For the US. As far as I’m concerned, they got one of ours and we got one of theirs. That seems fair.
The son of illegal immigrants, whose mother is still open for deportation, Henry Cejudo won the gold in wrestling. He has become a media star and a thorn in the sides of both of people who wish to close our borders and those who oppose such restrictions. His is a much more interesting story than Ms. Hammon’s and it is laden with real world ramifications. In other words, it is a story that is far beyond The Diva of Damnation’s capabilities.
All total, there are 32 foreign born athletes on the US team this year. In the last Olympiad there were 27.
Basically, a lot of people have left their home countries to come to the US to get a shot at the Olympics. Simply put, what’s the big deal? This isn’t new any more. We live in a country where kids change high schools to get on a better team. Or, have we forgotten Eddy Curry?
I am not, and have not been for a long time, a fan of the Olympics. I have no grand political axe to grind, no “purity of sport” issues or anything like that. It just seems to be an All Star competition for sports I never care about any other time and I see no reason to care now.
While it is sad that the only female athlete that Jay takes time to write* about is one who has perverted his* sense of justice, at least he* noticed a female athlete for a change. Although it is far too much to hope that he* could ever write* anything positive about a female athlete (remember his Danica Patrick hatchet job?), it would be nice if he* occasionally actually knew what the hell he* was talking about.
